What it is

Understanding OCD

OCD runs in a cycle: unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) create intense anxiety, and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) feel like the only way to relieve it. The relief never lasts, so the cycle repeats.

OCD is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. It isn't about being tidy or particular; it can attach to almost anything, from contamination and harm to relationships, morality, or symmetry. It can be exhausting and isolating, and it is highly treatable with the right care.

Signs

Signs you might recognize

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts that cause real distress
  • Repetitive checking, washing, counting, or arranging
  • Mental rituals: reviewing, reassuring, or 'undoing'
  • Seeking reassurance over and over
  • Avoiding triggers to keep the thoughts away
  • Hours lost to the cycle each day

Treatment

How we treat OCD

The gold standard for OCD is a specialized form of therapy called Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a type of CBT. ERP helps you face the thoughts that frighten you while resisting the compulsions, so your brain learns the fear fades on its own. It is very different from generic talk therapy, and it works.

When medication is helpful, certain options are well established for OCD. We use them conservatively, always alongside therapy and reviewed together, so your care is coordinated rather than fragmented.

Dr. Nguyen brings specialized experience in OCD, including work with InStride Health treating anxiety and OCD in young people, so this is an area of genuine focus at Voyager.
